FAQs

How much time do I have to commit? What if I have a busy schedule?
KSCR is flexible. People who put in more time and effort will enjoy more privileges. But unlike a lot of campus groups, we're not going to kick anyone out because he/she didn't go to an event or invest a certain amount of time. You can work according to your own schedule and we'd be fine with that (however, we love it when people are ultra-involved).

What genres of music do you play?
Just about anything. What don't we play?

Does KSCR broadcast other things besides music?
Although music takes up the majority of the time, KSCR also broadcasts news and sports.

Do you guys only play obscure, "indie" music?
Technically, a DJ can play anything he/she wants. But the purpose of any college radio station is to be progressive and expose students to new and/or under-appreciated music that is overlooked by the mainstream. If we played music that big-time radio stations played, then KSCR would just lose all meaning. However, we don't favor a band just because they're obscure. The music has to be good, first and foremost.

Do I need to know a lot about music?
Not necessarily. One of the biggest rewards about joining KSCR is developing an entirely new appreciation for music. Many people come in thinking they know what their top ten bands or albums are, or maybe they can't even say. But after working at KSCR they leave with a completely new list. If anything is guaranteed about joining KSCR, it's that your own personal library of music will expand and diversify.

How does the process of becoming a DJ work?
A rough sketch goes like this:
Stage 1: working with KSCR outside of the studio
Stage 2: in-studio training with a DJ
Stage 3: becoming a DJ
These stages may overlap, and there really is no strict guidelines as to how the progression follows.

Do I have to be a DJ? Can I do other things?
There is a multitude of ways for you to get involved. You get to select from an array of projects and choose the one that fits you best. We have our own newsletter called Bandwidth, which is also an online blog. Bandwidth is constantly in need of writers and assistant editors. Our website needs web designers to help with updates and maintenance. The sales department needs people who are business-savvy (music industry majors should take note). The promotions department needs imaginative people who can assist with graphic design projects (shirts, posters, etc.). The list goes on and on. There's something here for everyone.
