FAQs

How much time do I have to commit? What if I have a busy schedule?
KSCR is flexible. As you might imagine, people who put in more time and effort will probably come across more opportunities (and have a lot more fun), but unlike a lot of campus groups, we're not going to kick anyone out because they didn't go to an event or invest a certain amount of time. You can work according to your own schedule and we're cool with that (but if you want to be ultra-involved, we'll love you even more!)

What genres of music do you play?
Just about anything. What don't we play?

Does KSCR broadcast other things besides music?
Although most DJs tend to do music shows, KSCR also broadcasts news, sports and talk.

Do you guys only play obscure, "indie" music?
At KSCR, a DJ can technically play anything they want, but the purpose of a college radio station is to be progressive and expose students to new and/or under-appreciated music passed over or undiscovered by the mainstream. If we just played the music you can hear on big-time commerical radio, what would make us special? That having been said, we not members of the Pitchfork mafia and we don't favor a band just because they're obscure. First and foremost, we're lovers of good bands, not just bands nobody's heard of.

Do I need to know a lot about music?
Not necessarily. One of the biggest rewards about joining KSCR is developing an entirely new appreciation for music. Many people come in thinking they know what their top ten bands or albums are (or maybe they can't even say yet!) But after working at KSCR they leave with a completely new list. If anything is guaranteed about joining KSCR, it's that your own personal library of music will expand and diversify.

How does the process of becoming a DJ work?
A rough sketch goes like this:
Stage 1: Working with and getting to know KSCR outside of the studio
Stage 2: In-studio training, including a one-on-one mentorship with a DJ
Stage 3: Becoming a DJ
These stages may overlap and there's some flexibility as to how the progression follows. You'll learn all the nitty gritty once you get started.

Do I have to be a DJ? Can I do other things?
Petrified of going on-air? Fear not! There are tons of ways for you to get involved. You get to select from an array of projects and choose the one that fits you best. We have our own music/arts/culture/strangeness blog called Bandwidth which is always in need of writers, photographers and editors. As a station with a large online audience, our website is dire need of web designers and gurus to help with updates and maintenance. The sales department needs people who are business-savvy (music industry majors take note!) to help KSCR pay the bills. The promotions department needs imaginative people who can assist with graphic design projects (shirts, posters, etc.). The list goes on and on. There's something here for everyone.
