The story
A real estate agent is asked by his mother, Jenna Bennett, to sell the property her own mother, Renna Patterson, left her as a private refuge, so she can help her husband through a business slump. A buyer soon appears: a woman who wants the place held until her birthday, when her partner intends to give it to her. In a photo on the woman's phone, the agent recognises that partner — his own father, Austin Bennett.
As the woman, Kendra Hayes, chats on about the bracelet on her wrist, the seafood dinners and the Porsche test drive, the agent keeps his face businesslike and collects her details, screenshots and bank records. At home, his mother scrubs the kitchen floor and makes do with a broken refrigerator, still believing money is tight and that her husband's cough matters more than her own health.
He shows her the posts and the transfers, and the receipts she once labelled with his health in mind. When the signing day comes, he intends to bring a present of his own.
Opening
My mother, Jenna Bennett, approached me privately and asked me to sell her property. "Your dad is having a hard time with his business. I want to help him out."
The property had been left to Mom by my grandmother, Renna Patterson, so she'd always have a small refuge of her own, a place where she could feel safe and secure.
Now, for my father's sake, Mom was selling that refuge at a bargain price.
It didn't take long for a buyer to contact me.
The woman asked, "Hi, could you hold the property for me until next week? I'd like my partner to give it to me for my birthday."
