The story
In the third year of their marriage, a husband watches his wife, Lily Devon, buy a multi-million-dollar house for John Clapton, the ex-boyfriend she dated for eight years. When John flaunts the villa and a lavish renovation bill online, Lily insists she is only keeping an old promise, and scolds her husband for being vicious and ungrateful.
Since John reappeared, the marriage has pushed the husband from health into moderate depression. Lily throws away his Paroxetine, passes on John's half-wilted bouquet and expired ointment, and leaves him bleeding on the pavement outside the hospital when John calls. That night, a doctor tells him he has a malignant stomach tumor and recommends immediate surgery.
As Lily comforts John on the phone and slips into bed for their weekly check, the husband locks the door, packs for his operation, and messages his lawyer to prepare the divorce papers.
Opening
In the third year of our marriage, my wife’s ex-boyfriend of eight years suddenly posted a picture on social media showing off a multi-million-dollar wedding house. His caption read:
“Wow, got myself a huge villa, I’m the master of charming women!”
I stared in shock at the picture, which showed my wife swiping her card at a sales office, and left a single comment: "?"
A second later, my wife called to scold me.
“I was just fulfilling a promise I made to him back when we were dating, buying him a house.
