The story
After an induced abortion, Penny Patterson lies in a hospital bed while her mother, Stella Damone, recovers from surgery beside her. Outside, Oceanville is still reeling from a storm that killed 18 people on the subway line. Penny calls her husband, firefighter Walter Patterson, but he is busy tending to Tracy, whose leg is hurt and whose dog is on a drip, alongside his father, the veterinarian Thomas Patterson.
When Penny asks for a divorce, Walter explodes, accusing her of lacking empathy and warning her against raising their child fatherless. He blocks her number. Stella then calls Thomas, who turns on her for the same request, insisting Tracy has always mattered more and threatening to keep the baby.
Mother and daughter, who married the Patterson father and son on the same day, now face the same betrayal and the same choice.
Opening
By the time my induced abortion surgery was over, it was already late at night. The huge storm had reduced to a tiny drizzle outside the window.
The news on TV was still reporting on the major rainstorm that just happened earlier today. Its headlines read, "Severe Torrential Rain in Oceanville Leaves 18 Dead on Subway Line, 600 Passengers Evacuated".
Despite the discomfort from the anesthetic, I forced myself to search for my phone and call my husband…
