The story
After her husband Jerome Shaw's brother dies, he takes in his widowed sister-in-law Miranda Jones and her children. He promises Nathalie his love, yet sends his money to Miranda, leaving Nathalie and her two children in the countryside. When famine comes, the children starve and freeze while Miranda's family lives well. Jerome returns only to ask for a divorce, saying he wants to give Miranda a home. Devastated, Nathalie throws herself into an icy river.
She wakes on the day her children are about to die. This time she sells the watch Jerome gave her, buys grain, and saves them. She travels to Jerome's home, less than 30 miles away, where a guard greets Miranda as Mrs. Shaw and Miranda's son Alex calls Jerome Daddy. Nathalie says she is not going back, and Jerome insists he sent her money every month.
Opening
After my husband's brother died, he took Miranda, his widowed sister-in-law in. He claimed that he would give me his love—but gave all his money to her.
He said that since she had no official status, being with him would make her the subject of gossip, so he took her with him and left me behind in the countryside.
