The story
Hannah takes her mother on a long-promised trip to the sea, hoping to fulfil the older woman's lifelong dream of seeing the ocean. But from the moment they board the plane, her mother's face is set in a scowl, and on the sand she accuses Hannah of being ungrateful for not bringing her brother Jason's family along.
Her mother demands that Hannah buy plane tickets, five-star oceanfront rooms and spending money for Jason, his wife and their children, insisting that because Jason cares for her, Hannah owes them everything. When Hannah refuses, her mother shoves Hannah's young daughter into the waves and wades into the sea herself, threatening to drown and leave Hannah with a lifetime of guilt.
Hannah books her mother a train ticket home instead, and slips the gold bracelet meant as a gift onto her own wrist. She has decided to stop being the family's cash cow, and now waits to see how Jason will care for the mother who gave him everything.
Opening
I took my mom on a trip to the beach. She stared out at the horizon and suddenly said:
"Honestly, you're really ungrateful."
I froze.
"Didn't you say your lifelong dream was to see the ocean? I brought you here. How am I still ungrateful?"
She grabbed a handful of sand and threw it at my head in frustration.
"What's the point of me coming alone? Why didn't you bring your brother's family?
