The story
Returning home past midnight from a month-long business trip, Edgar finds a man's shirt on the couch that is not his. His wife, Celeste Beaumont, a fashion designer who knows his measurements by heart, says it is a gift for him, yet the L-sized shirt is far too tight for his XL frame. When he questions her, she claims she mixed up pieces meant for him and her brother, Felix Beaumont, who shares his build.
Celeste later explains that Felix was hospitalized and lost weight, and that she has been exhausted caring for him. Guilt replaces Edgar's suspicion, until he notices a young man's voice on her phone and learns she has hired a handsome male secretary, Kai Carter, for her menswear line. Though the office footage shows nothing improper, the shirt still lingers in his mind: would a designer so sensitive to measurements really make such a mistake?
Opening
By the time I return home from a business trip, it is past midnight. However, my wife, Celeste Beaumont, isn't home.
A man's shirt that isn't mine is lying on the couch.
When I call her, she tells me that she's working late at the office.
"Whose shirt is it on the couch?" I ask, cutting straight to the point.
She playfully scolds, "Who else would it be? It's a gift for you, so hurry up and try it on."
I skeptically put it on and immediately feel how tight and uncomfortable it is across my shoulders. "This is an L, babe. I've always worn XL."
