The story
Quinn has spent ten years serving Marcus Hayes and their son Hudson, until a fall at the bottom of the stairs leaves her ignored by both. When she feigns amnesia, Marcus's assistant Stella Monroe calls her the housekeeper and announces she is fired for chipping the custom steps. Quinn calmly demands ten years of severance, and Marcus pays her eighty thousand dollars before leaving with Stella and Hudson.
Alone in the silent house, Quinn confronts the truth of a decade spent surrendering her career and identity to a cold husband and a son who mimics his disdain. Then a missed period and a clinic visit bring a second shock: she is seven weeks pregnant, and the clarity she has finally found collides with a decision she never expected to face.
Opening
Marcus was sitting at the kitchen island just a few feet away, deep in a Zoom call. He didn't even glance up.
My ten-year-old son, Hudson, was scowling at his textbook on the sofa. "You just made me miss half my French tutoring session."
Looking at these two identical, ice-cold faces, a sudden, suffocating wave of anger washed over me. I had served this man and his son for a decade.
