The story
On a rainy day, Rosalind Whitney kindly drives one of her students, Howie, to school. From then on, his mother treats her as a personal chauffeur, expecting her to ferry the boy to and from school every day. When Rosalind misses a pickup for a prenatal checkup, Howie's mother demands she abort her baby or she will file a complaint.
Rosalind refuses to be bullied. She tells the woman that driving her son was a courtesy, not an obligation, and that whether she keeps her baby is none of her business. But the harassment escalates: Howie's mother files a complaint with the school and demands sixty thousand dollars for a scrape on her son's knee, while Howie himself says the fall was his own fault.
Summoned by grade-level director Gordon Lawrence, Rosalind finds him siding with the parent, pressuring her to abort and pay, and threatening her job. With her husband Cedric Simmons supporting her, Rosalind refuses to give in.
Opening
One rainy day I gave a student a ride to school out of kindness, and just like that, his mother started treating me as her personal chauffeur.
Every day she waited at the front gate of her complex, expecting me to ferry her son to and from school.
It wasn't exactly convenient, but the route lined up, so I let it slide.
Then one day I took time off for a prenatal checkup and didn't come down on schedule. Howie's mother called the second I was late.
"Ms. Whitney, my Howie's about to be late for school, and here you are sleeping in!"
