The story
Five years after his parents' divorce, Jordan Grey meets his mother, Ginny Stroll, at school. Fresh from the parent-teacher meeting of her stepdaughter Olivia Russell, the top student in the grade, she frowns at him, hands him a business card, and offers to enroll him in the international program if his father admits his mistake. He refuses, and she tells him never to say he is her son.
She does not know the paper he holds is not a report card but his withdrawal application, submitted after his father's death left no one to pay his tuition. In the office, teachers praise Ms. Stroll's donation and her care for Olivia, while Jordan says nothing. By his father's grave that night, he admits he can no longer hold on.
The next day, an anonymous post accusing his mother of abandoning her own son spreads through the school, and everyone assumes Jordan wrote it.
Opening
She had just finished a parent-teacher meeting for her stepdaughter, who was the top student in the grade, and was beaming with joy. The moment she saw me, her expression darkened. "Do you always come to school dressed like this? This is how your father is raising you?"
She handed me a business card and said in a condescending tone, "Take this. Tell your father that I'll enroll you in the international program right away if he's willing to admit his mistake.
