The story
Stella Monroe wakes in a hospital bed with no memory of the man everyone says she nearly died for. Her best friend Harper recounts the humiliating truth: four years spent chasing Tristan Vance, a company built at his side, and a proposal that vanished the moment his childhood sweetheart Serena Blake returned and took Stella's place. When Tristan and Serena appear at her bedside with a liability waiver and a cold demand to stop causing drama, Stella feels nothing but a stranger's confusion.
The doctor confirms it: the accident left her with amnesia. Harper calls the blow to the head the best thing that ever happened to her, and Stella, clear-eyed for the first time, agrees that Tristan is human garbage. Yet Serena whispers through the hospital door that Stella's memory loss is a calculated tactic to keep him, and Tristan, certain she could never forget him, leaves her to be handled.
Now Stella must decide what to do with a past she cannot feel and a future everyone else is still writing for her.
Opening
My best friend wouldn't stop nagging me, listing out every pathetic, desperate thing I had done while chasing Tristan Vance.
"You gave him your entire heart," she said, exasperated. "And he treated you like a piece of furniture."
Finally, she sighed, poking me hard in the forehead. "Please tell me you're done running after him like a lost puppy!"
I hesitated for a moment, genuinely confused, and asked, "Who is Tristan Vance?"
