The story
A staged kidnapping took Chloe's legs and her young son Leo. Her husband Alexander quit his job to care for her, and she believed his grief was real—until she overheard him confess that he had paid the kidnappers himself, to break her legs and avenge Cynthia, the dancer whose place Chloe had taken as prima ballerina. Their own child died in the ambush meant for her.
Now Chloe sees the tenderness for what it is: a performance. Alexander brings Cynthia into their home, hides Leo's belongings from her, and speaks of adopting a boy who resembles their lost son—a child Chloe learns is Alexander's own. On Leo's birthday, Cynthia stands at the grave, mocking the dead child and his mother.
Chloe has stopped craving his love. What she does with the truth, and with the marriage built on revenge, is hers to decide.
Opening
A staged kidnapping cost me both my legs and my son.
Afraid that I’d break, my husband quit his job to stay by my side, treating me with doubled devotion.
Yet in the dead of night, he would stare blankly at our son’s picture.
I knew he blamed me for indirectly causing our boy's death.
