The story
The day Angeline Delmont announces she has uterine cancer, she moves into the home of her son Rowan and his wife Daphne, insisting she has little time left and begging for mercy. Rowan and Daphne's son Everett side with the grandmother, urging Daphne to let her stay.
Daphne remembers that Angeline once nearly killed Everett, and that Rowan had promised to keep his mother away. When Daphne resists, Rowan and Everett turn on her, with Everett threatening never to call her Mom again if she refuses. Daphne declares there is only room in the family for one of them.
Retreating to her room, Daphne sees her silence mistaken for submission as Rowan, Everett and Angeline celebrate together, their joy built on her pain.
Opening
“I don’t have much time left. I’m all out of hope!” she choked out. “You’d be cruel to kick me out. Show me some mercy!”
I looked at my speechless husband, then at my beloved son I had raised with so much love and care. I asked them, "What do you guys think?"
My husband silently made a grim expression and grabbed my arm.
“How long are you going to hold on to that little incident that happened after Everett was born? Mom's already so sick."
