The story
After an accident erased three years of her memory, Vivienne Hayes has built a quiet life as the adopted daughter of Catherine Montgomery, raising her young son Toby under the protection of Dominic Kane. A simple outing for cake shatters when a stranger named Garrett seizes her wrist, insisting she is his lost wife and that Toby is his flesh and blood. A woman in ivory, Stella, and a furious older woman close in, and a young man named Landon twists her arm, all demanding she stop her "amnesia act" and accept their version of the past.
Yet Vivienne knows Dominic guards Toby as his own, and that Garrett and Stella are now legally married. When she names Dominic Kane as her husband, terror floods their faces, and they crush the emergency transmitter hidden in her sleeve. They believe Dominic's wife is another woman entirely, and that any whisper of her claims will bring his security down upon them.
Trapped on the pavement with her crying son, Vivienne must decide how to survive the family that left her in a burning car.

Three years after the accident that stole my memory, I slipped away from the estate on an overcast Tuesday morning, holding my three-year-old son by the hand, intent on buying him a strawberry shortcake.
We had barely stepped onto the sidewalk outside the bakery when a man materialized from the crowd, blocking our path. Before I could pull back, his fingers clamped around my wrist like a vice. His gaze dropped to the little boy clinging to my coat, and his eyes rimmed with sudden, violent crimson.
