The story
At the office, Valerie has a habit of eating her fill and then dodging her share of the bill, leaning on her connections at the Manhattan Headquarters to silence complaints. When a new colleague, Grace, organizes a self-pay company dinner, Valerie insists she will pay her own way—then orders the priciest sashimi, lobster, sake and foie gras, and piles most of the food onto her plate before anyone else can eat. The table turns tense as colleagues demand she leave.
Grace, who has seen worse tricks, quietly promises Jamie she will recover the lunch money Valerie owes him. But Valerie has threatened that anyone who crosses her might find themselves unemployed.
Opening
“Everybody ate, so why should I pay more? We all breathed the air, too—why don’t you charge for that?”
Because she has connections higher up, most people just swallow their frustration.
Since I was new, I volunteered to organize a company dinner and suggested we split the cost. Val zeroed in on this, ate, and then tried to avoid paying.
