The story
Roderick Delgado is the youngest chief physician-licensing examiner in the country, a Harvard graduate who returned home with one purpose: to bring to justice the people responsible for his mother's death on an operating table eighteen years ago. His father, Cole Pruitt, a celebrated cardiothoracic surgeon, refused to operate on her because he was busy saving another woman, and handed the surgery to an unqualified assistant.
Now Cole Pruitt's daughter, Cornelia Pruitt, needs Roderick's signature to become the youngest cardiothoracic attending physician in the country. He refuses, citing her failure to meet the standard. The deputy director warns him that crossing Cole Pruitt has serious consequences, and the next morning the disciplinary inspection team arrives with a joint complaint of abuse of authority.
Roderick stands his ground, insisting that as long as he remains chief examiner, who passes and who fails is his call.
