The story
Naomi Aldridge has spent years caring for her daughter Lisa Mercer's household in the Maple Ridge apartment, a home she and her late husband Henry Mercer bought for their retirement. When Lisa hands out plane tickets for a New Year trip to Costa Bella, she tells Naomi to pack her things and return to her own place, warning that if anything went missing while the family was away, Naomi would be blamed.
Naomi leaves without a fight, but the insult cuts deep: she is treated as a suspect in her own home. She calls real estate agent Kevin Morris and asks him to list the apartment below market, then sells it to Mr. Patterson for 2.3 million dollars and has Lisa's family's belongings moved out.
When Lisa and her in-laws, including Diane Holloway, return from their vacation, they find the home they have lived in for eight years has a new owner.
Opening
After having dinner on the holiday eve, I'm about to distribute the gift cards to the younger generation of the family when my daughter, Lisa Mercer, speaks up.
"Mom, we're not going to celebrate the holidays at home. You should pack up and go back to your own home too."
Shock flashes across my face. "It's nighttime, and yet you want me to leave right now?"
Lisa replies calmly, "I'm doing this for your own good. If you stay in my house on your own, you won't be able to defend yourself if anything in this house goes missing."
