The story

The holidays are over, and a girl watches her parents pack the SUV for the city. Her little brother, Beau, rides up front like a king, but the door will not open for her. She throws herself in front of the hood, screaming, while her mother films her for followers and asks how she will eat or have nice clothes if they do not work. A cousin shouts to just take her, and her father lifts her up, wipes her tears, and offers a game: hide so well they cannot find her, and she can come along.

Opening

I wanted to go, too. I needed to go. But no matter how hard I pulled at the door handle, it wouldn’t budge. It was locked tight.

As the engine roared to life and the car began to crawl forward, panic seized me. I threw myself in front of the hood, screaming until my throat felt raw. "Why does he get to go? Why not me?"

I pounded on the tinted glass, desperate for a glance, a sign. Finally, Mom turned her head. She didn’t unlock the door.
