The story
At a party, Zach hands out gifts to everyone, including a bottle of designer perfume for his ex-girlfriend Maya. But for his wife Chloe and their daughter Lily, his hands are empty — even though it is Lily's birthday. He tosses Lily a cheap plastic keychain, then ignores her hurt and turns back to Maya, laughing over old memories. Chloe sits in silence, her heart growing cold.
Zach remembers Maya's favorite scent and a friend's bad neck, yet he cannot remember his own daughter's birthday. Later, a text from Chloe's lawyer confirms the divorce papers are ready. When Zach finally calls, he accuses her of throwing a tantrum over one forgotten birthday. Chloe tells him she has signed the papers.
As Zach spends the night out with Maya and his friends, Chloe sits beside her sleeping daughter, watching her whisper for her father in her dreams. In seven years of marriage, his memory never failed for anyone but them.
Opening
At the party, my husband had a gift for everyone.
He even gave his ex-girlfriend, Maya, a bottle of designer perfume worth over five hundred dollars.
But when he got to our daughter and me, his hands were empty.
Everyone at the table froze. "Wait, Zach, where are Chloe and Lily’s gifts? Isn't today Lily's birthday?"
Zach blinked, waving his hand dismissively.
"Chloe and I have been married for seven years. We don't need that stuff.
