The story
Just before graduation, Jane's boyfriend of four years, Scott, ends their relationship and leaves her a villa, a Bentley and eighteen million dollars. His reason: for families like his, love and marriage are separate, and he is returning home for an arranged marriage. He vanishes, his number disconnected and his social media deleted, until his lawyer delivers the deed of gift.
Jane does not need his money, and she refuses to accept that four steady years meant nothing. Using her family's resources, she tracks Scott to his engagement party, where his fiancée, Veronica Thorne of the wealthy Thorne family of St. Claire, stands beside him. Jane is certain he is being threatened and unhappy, but when she calls out to him, Scott dismisses her as a pathetic groupie and has her thrown out. Confronting him, she asks whether he ever loved her; he answers that he was with her because she was beautiful and poor enough to be easily managed.
Heartbroken but resolved, Jane prepares to walk away. Veronica blocks her path, insisting she stay and watch.
Opening
Just before graduation, my boyfriend of four years, Scott, ended our relationship. As a parting gift, he gave me a villa, a Bentley, and eighteen million dollars — a token of gratitude, he said. Stunned, I demanded to know why. His voice turned cold: “For people like me, love and marriage are separate. I’m returning home for an arranged marriage.” He was engaged — to someone else.
At the engagement party, I saw Scott, handsome in a bespoke suit.
