The story
On the anniversary of her mother's death, Sophia scrolls a forum and finds a post by Kiera, the illegitimate daughter her family never acknowledged. Kiera boasts that her brother-in-law is her devoted lapdog: he married Sophia to clear Kiera's name, arranged the loss of every pregnancy until Sophia could no longer conceive, and now plans to have his own five-year-old son adopted by her. A vacation photo shows a tattoo identical to her husband Daniel's.
Kiera also flaunts the deed to Sophia's childhood home, the last thing her mother left her. Sophia recalls how Daniel, claiming bankruptcy and prison, begged her to hand over the deed as collateral. It was all an act, staged to give the house to Kiera.
Daniel returns, dodging the cemetery visit, and brings home a boy named Cody, who resembles Kiera. Sophia sees the mask slipping and vows to take back everything they owe her, with interest.
Opening
On my way to visit my mother’s grave, I scrolled through a forum and saw a post titled, “What’s the most pathetic lapdog you’ve ever seen?”
The top reply read:
“My brother-in-law — but he’s not loyal to my sister. He’s mine. I’m the illegitimate daughter nobody acknowledged. On my 18th birthday, I ran over my dad’s wife to help my mom take her place.
