The story
Joel Whitman's wife, Sienna Fairchild, keeps one unbreakable rule: every Monday belongs to dinner with her brother-in-law, Kent Palmer, and his son Jamie. Phone off, messages blocked, nothing takes priority.
When their daughter Abby falls down the stairs at preschool and breaks her arm, Joel calls Sienna over a dozen times with no answer. Reaching Kent instead, he finally hears her voice — and her cold dismissal. At home, Sienna blames Abby for the injury, and when Kent arrives with Jamie, a slap and a slammed door leave Abby asking whether her mother still wants her.
A lunch meant to smooth things over ends with Jamie tearing the locket from Abby's bandaged arm. As Sienna hesitates between her daughter and Jamie's tantrum, Joel carries Abby to the hospital alone, where the doctor warns a second fracture could affect how the bone heals.
Opening
My wife, Sienna Fairchild, has one ironclad rule. Every Monday, she has dinner with her brother-in-law.
During that time, she turns off her phone and blocks every message. Nothing, no matter how urgent, takes priority over their little family gathering.
Then one day, our daughter falls down the stairs at preschool and breaks her arm. I call Sienna over a dozen times, but not a single one goes through. With no other option, I call her brother-in-law instead.
"Abby got hurt at school. Can you have Sienna come to the hospital?"
