The story
After finding condoms in her husband Jacob's passenger seat yet again, Iman is no longer angry. She quietly helps him put them away, and when he insists the box is unopened and offers to buy a Christmas gift for her mother, her tears finally fall. Her mother is dead, and Jacob still does not know.
Jacob promises to travel back with her for Christmas, but he never comes. He blames work, then Leah, who is supposedly in surgery. Iman goes alone, sitting at her mother's grave and telling her she has lost the son-in-law she once loved. Uncle Coleman and Aunt May urge her to keep the peace, unaware she has already hired a lawyer.
On the flight back to Los Angeles, the divorce agreement arrives on her phone. At the airport she runs into Jacob and Leah, and the sight of them together only hardens her resolve.
Opening
After finding condoms in my husband Jacob's passenger seat yet again, I wasn't angry anymore. I just silently helped him put them away.
Jacob gave me a complicated look and volunteered an explanation.
"Check for yourself. This box hasn't even been opened."
I said nothing, closing my eyes and pretending to sleep.
Half an hour later, he pulled up in front of a store and said to me:
"Let's go buy a gift for your mom. We'll go back to your place together for Christmas to see her."
My tears finally fell.
My mom was dead. He still didn't know.
"Iman? Are you listening to me?"
