The story
For twenty-eight days, a wife has been teaching her six-year-old son Luca to call his father Don Moretti instead of Papa. Each time Matteo abandons them for Bianca Bellini and her son Tommy, the boy loses a little more of his father. Now, outside the iron gates of the Moretti estate on the night of the succession dinner, Luca waves his father away and says the words without hesitation.
Matteo had promised to name Luca his chosen heir before every capo and elder. But Bianca's driver arrives again, and Tommy is crying for him. The wife, the family's legal counsel, has already hidden divorce and custody papers among the contracts Matteo signs each morning. She has reserved two tickets to Boston.
When a place card arrives with Luca's name crossed out and Tommy's written above it, she no longer needs to ask which son Matteo has chosen.
Opening
My six-year-old son raised one small hand and waved goodbye to his father.
Matteo froze.
For twenty-eight days, I had been teaching Luca to call him Don Moretti instead of Papa.
It started the night Luca was burning with fever.
Bianca Bellini sent word that her son was crying for Matteo, and my husband left our sick child without looking back.
I held Luca against my chest and whispered, “Say goodnight to Don Moretti.”
