The story
On her eighth wedding anniversary, Lydia has a candlelit dinner waiting and a positive pregnancy test hidden under her napkin. Then a call from her husband Gary shows him in a lounge with another woman, and he shrugs off the betrayal as a need for a spark. She destroys the test and the medical report, then goes to a clinic and ends the pregnancy that took eight years and countless treatments to achieve.
Gary returns after midnight, reeking of bourbon and sex, and admits he has kept a mistress for a year. When Lydia slaps him and demands a divorce, he tears up the papers and reminds her that being his wife pays for her grandmother's care in Zurich, threatening to leave her with nothing.
As she grieves the man who once promised her the world, his assistant sends intimate photos and taunts her to coexist. With no friends left, Lydia drives two hours to her younger sister Rebecca, who greets her in a heavy cardigan despite the summer heat.

Then, my phone buzzed. A FaceTime call from Gary.
The background was a chaotic blur of a dimly lit lounge. His voice was thick, a strange, gravelly rasp that made my skin crawl. But it was the angry red mark on the side of his neck that caught the light, bright and unmistakable.
“Hey, babe. Guess what I’ve been up to?” He grinned, that lopsided, playful smirk that used to make my heart melt. Now, his tone felt like a needle driving into my ear.
