“Dr. Quayle, how have you lost so much weight?”
The medical intern, Micah Calloway, handed me a cup of coffee and sat beside me.
I touched my face to discover he was right. My cheeks had hollowed out noticeably.
But there was no way I was going to tell anyone the real reason.
“I’ve been on a diet lately,” I said.
He suddenly leaned closer and startled me.
“Dr. Quayle, you’re already perfect. You don’t need to lose any weight!”
His breath brushed lightly across my cheek, making me a little uncomfortable.
Thankfully, he leaned back a second later.
“I’ve got to get back to my shift.”
Micah trudged downstairs with a dramatic sigh.
I could not help but smile as I watched his retreating figure.
It reminded me of my own internship days. It was nice to be young.
Just then, a nurse called me.
“Dr. Quayle, Bianca Dane is looking for you.”
After draining the last of my coffee, I let out a sigh.
I did not wish to see her, but professional ethics left me no choice.
I had to meet my husband’s mistress.
Even in a hospital gown, Bianca looked anything but disheveled.
“Miss Dane, are you experiencing any discomfort?”
I refused to let my personal feelings affect my work, even if the woman in front of me was Liam’s mistress.
She showed no embarrassment whatsoever as she asked in concern, “Dr. Quayle, am I going to lose my figure after this? I’m worried it’ll affect things between my hubby and me.”
“Since you had a C-section, it shouldn’t affect you much. You’ll recover within a few months.”
Only then did she smile in satisfaction and extend her hand toward me.
“Isn’t it gorgeous, Dr. Quayle? My hubby bought it for me!”
I gave a noncommittal nod.
“I was worried the C-section scar would scare my hubby, but he said…”
As she spoke, Bianca began to chuckle.
“Miss Dane, if you’re not experiencing any discomfort, please leave. I have other patients to see,” I said with a frown.
Her shoulders stopped shaking, and a triumphant smile spread across her face.
“He said I gave him a son, so this scar is a mark of honor.
“Let me tell you a secret, Dr. Quayle. My hubby is tired of his first wife. He says she’s aging and no longer attractive. She’s almost forty.”
Then, she covered her mouth dramatically. “Dr. Quayle, you’re almost forty, too! Does your husband still sleep with you?”
I glanced at the phone she had been keeping pressed against the desk before removing my white coat.
Bianca looked confused. “Dr. Quayle, what are you doing?”
“You’re Bianca Dane, right? You were recording this, weren’t you?”
I leaned back in my chair with my arms crossed.
