The story
Clara discovers the house her birth parents left her, filled with her own baby pictures and missing-child flyers. Grief erupts, and she blames her husband, Caleb, for pushing Lila into the adoption spot that should have been hers, costing her years in a brutal orphanage and her parents' lives. When she opens her eyes again, she is a child facing that same adoption slot, and this time she offers it to Lila herself.
Caleb has returned too, regretful and determined to protect her. But when Lila stages the same desperate performance that once saved Clara, Caleb's pity flickers, and Clara steps forward to name the director's cruelty. Both she and Caleb urge the Graysons to adopt Lila, and Clara refuses their charity, choosing to stay behind.
Caleb promises to save her, yet Lila's hold on him never breaks. Clara must face the director's escalating cruelty alone, with no intention of ever trusting Caleb again.
Opening
All they left me was a house filled with my own baby pictures and mountains of missing-child flyers bearing my face.
The grief and injustice I had swallowed for twenty years erupted in that single moment.
I spun around and slapped my husband, Caleb, so hard the sound echoed in the empty room.
“This is your fault! All of it!”
“If you hadn’t pushed for Lila to take my adoption spot, I never would have been left to rot in that place for five more years!”
