The story
Emma dies by suicide in the year her husband Dan Fanning hates her most, believing she drove his first love Evelyn Wright to her death. At the crematorium, Dan watches the flames with an unreadable expression, refuses a final look, and when the urn is handed to him, he knocks it to the floor. He orders the ashes swept up and flushed away, then walks out without looking back.
Outside, Emma's college roommate Sarah Aison rushes to say goodbye and finds staff sweeping the ashes into a dustpan. She confronts Dan, insisting Evelyn's death had nothing to do with Emma, but he cuts her off and has his bodyguards beat her until she lies bleeding. Emma, a helpless spirit, screams that Sarah is innocent, unheard by anyone.
Sarah warns that Dan will regret this one day. He only tilts his head and says he looks forward to seeing how she plans to make him.
Opening
I died in the year my husband hated me most.
Unable to endure his endless silent treatment any longer, I swallowed a bottle of pills and ended my life.
At the crematorium, watching the flames roar inside the furnace, he allowed himself a rare smile.
“Someone as vile as her doesn’t deserve to be laid to rest whole.”
