The story
Every New Year's Day, Carol hides a coin in a special Croissant, and whoever finds it must contribute to the Family Trust Fund. For two decades, Jenna has bitten down on the cold metal, coaxed by her mother's claim that she is the luckiest child in the family. Only last year did she finally clear twenty-three years of accumulated debt.
This year the stakes jump to Fifty Thousand Dollars. Jenna bites into the coin, but instead of speaking, she swallows it and says nothing. When Carol's calculating gaze snaps to her, Jenna denies it. A frantic search of her bowl, her mouth and her body turns up nothing, and her father Richard accuses her of hiding the coin.
When a fresh batch is made, Jenna insists on cooking it herself. The coin surfaces in her bowl again, but she spits it out and points to her brother Jake. Her parents refuse to make Jake pay, and Jenna trembles with rage at the injustice she has carried for years.
Opening
Her rule was simple: “Every New Year’s Day, I’ll hide a coin in one of the special Croissant. Whoever finds it has to contribute to the fund for the year.”
And every year since then, I was the one who bit down on the cold metal.
It was a brilliant scheme to exploit me.
Every day, Mom would coo, “You are the luckiest child in this family, Jenna. Others wish they had your fortune!”
That lie—that I was blessed—coaxed me into paying for two decades.
It wasn’t until last year that I finally cleared the twenty-three years of accumulated debt.
