The story
Rumour has it that Weston, the golden boy of the pre-law program, lives by a strict moral code: he turns down every confession, but always repays the cost of the gift. For a broke college student surviving on instant noodles, that rule looks less like principle and more like an opportunity. A two-dollar beaded bracelet becomes a seven-hundred-and-eighty-dollar confession, and Weston pays up without blinking.
When her mother cuts her monthly allowance to forty dollars, the scheme revives itself. Armed with a capybara keychain and a notebook of memorised romantic lines, she ambushes Weston again, only to fumble every word in front of him and his laughing friend. Weston still pays, and his friend invites her to cheer at tomorrow's basketball game.
Her dignity is negotiable. Her tuition is not.
Opening
Whenever a girl confessed her feelings and gave him a gift, he would reject her flat out. But to keep his conscience clear, he would always pay her back for whatever the gift cost.
As a broke college student surviving on instant noodles, desperation bred a wicked idea in my head.
Clutching a cheap beaded bracelet I bought off a street vendor for two bucks, I blocked his path and put on my most soulful gaze.
