The story
Vanessa has suffered from severe postpartum depression since the birth of her daughter, Hazel, and for eighteen years the household has revolved around her rages. Whenever her husband, Kevin, shows Hazel the smallest kindness, Vanessa screams, threatens suicide, or turns violent, and Hazel's grandparents, Vale and Anna, blame the girl for her mother's misery. Hazel grows up eating alone, ignored at the dinner table, and never once picked up from school.
After a month away at university military training, Hazel comes home with an Outstanding Model Soldier certificate, hoping to share her good news. Instead, Vanessa accuses her of seducing Kevin, slaps her, and beats her until the certificate lies trampled on the floor. That night, Kevin's quiet attempt to defend her only provokes Vanessa further, and she bursts into Hazel's room, demanding to know why her daughter keeps doing this to her.
Eighteen years of being treated as the mistake her mother never forgave have left Hazel with nothing but a question: how much more is she expected to endure?
Opening
Ever since I was a child, Mom would scream so loudly that it could shake the entire house whenever Dad held me.
She, who felt as though the world had abandoned her, would threaten suicide whenever my grandparents came near me.
I couldn't even handle the complaints because they would only lead to accusations rather than comfort.
“If it weren’t for giving birth to you, how could your mom be depressed? You’re the reason she’s like this!”
It wasn’t until the end of my university military training that I finally received the Top Freshman Award.
