almost an hour. He didn't know what he was looking for as he stood there with his feet planted in the soft grass. The cold wind hit Videric's face and carried with it the smell of peas. He took a deep breath, felt the aroma enter his lungs and tickle, as if reminding him of what the red sap was capable of. He could even taste it. He ran his tongue over his lips and placed the red-handled dagger in its sheath. The wind seemed to whisper a thank you and Videric looked back at the trees. The scent of peas brought a new smell, one familiar and welcome. Videric just grimaced and waited for his brother to appear. After a while, a tall red- haired vampire walked out from among the wide-trunked trees of the White Forests. He wore dark clothes and the orange threads contrasted with the color of his velvet doublet. Atman's daughters preferred light colors for clothing, but Arsene was not an ordinary wizard: vampiric blood ran through his veins and the preference for dark always appeared in the small nuances he carried. Arsene's red eyes looked over Videric's face with attention and a sideways smile made the older brother want to punch the younger one's pale face. Arsene's smile grew. — She's not here, Videric. Videric's irritation increased two degrees, becoming dangerously high, and making him want to reach for the dagger. He was irritated at being easily read by his brother and at having his desire so exposed to a person who could make fun of it. — And she won't appear... — Arsene's voice was a mix of amusement and warning. — Nyana is an oracle, so she must stay within the borders of the White Forests. Videric was tired of hearing about it, he himself had seen months ago how Nyana's power.

reacted to external interventions. He had saved her from the attacks of underworld demons in those same forests, when the trees had decided he was welcome. And Nyana had never seen a man in her life, much less a vampire. Much less a vampire covered in blood and with eyes shot with fury. Even so, against her own instinct, she helped him recover from the absurd amount of poison that was in his fesh after the battle. When he did this, he created a bond with the vampire, who now began pacing back and forth, followed by a pair of red eyes. — Nyana came to meet me before we marched south. — You know that was a calculated and rare decision, Videric. We all make decisions like this before battles. Videric had no doubt that his brother was able to see the sadness crossing his face
