The story
Three days before Christmas, Riley is blamed when her sister Willow catches a cold, and her parents send her into the snowy woods at night to chop down a Christmas tree. Instead of a tree, she finds an injured man, Matteus Blackwood, trapped between rocks. She frees him and drags him home, hoping he might become the father who finally loves her.
But her parents, Grandma Elsie and Willow only see his bracelet, and Matteus's gratitude lands on Willow, not on Riley, who sleeps on the storage-room floor and goes hungry. When Riley returns to the woods at dawn, she meets Seraphina Thorne, a stranded traveler she boldly asks to be her mother.
Seraphina refuses to take the place of a living mother, yet agrees to hide in the storage room, where she and Matteus recognize each other. As Riley's cut hand and frostbitten arms are bandaged, her family's cruelty closes in, and the two strangers begin to see what no one else will.
Opening
My parents immediately kicked me out, ordering me to go into the woods in the middle of the night to chop down a Christmas tree.
Meanwhile, Mom and Dad hovered around Willow, asking her endless questions and fussing over her.
I didn't cry, didn't argue. I just grabbed the saw and walked into the biting wind and snow, heading for the woods.
I didn't find a Christmas tree, but I found a man.
