The story
Frankie has been returned to The St. Jude’s Home for Children three times, her file stamped unsuitable for adoption. She is mouthy, not compliant, and she knows it. Then a tenth couple arrives with their son Rhys, and invisible subtitles begin scrolling across her vision, warning that the boy is a future villain whose family will ruin anyone who crosses him.
Rhys insults her, and Frankie answers back, reducing him to tears. His mother Eleanor and father Charles Harrington watch the chaos, and instead of choosing the quiet girl the subtitles call the Heroine, Charles decides to adopt Frankie as a wild card against his son. The subtitles reveal the Harringtons grant an adopted child a billion-dollar trust fund at eighteen, provided the child survives that long.
Frankie accepts, and Rhys shrieks that Charles is not her dad. She coolly informs him otherwise, then questions his intelligence until he collapses in another tantrum. The subtitles wonder how the Heroine, Daisy Bloom, will now meet her hero without the villain’s interference.
Opening
My file said I was "unsuitable for adoption." Because I’m not just oppositional; I’m aggressively mouthy.
It wasn't until the tenth couple walked in, dragging a little boy with them, that things got interesting.
Suddenly, the world went fuzzy, and the familiar, invisible subtitles began to scroll across my vision:
