The story
Lori returns home after a summer job, hoping to treat her parents and younger sister Alyssa to a meal. Instead, her mother dismisses her earnings, Alyssa mocks her, and both compare her unfavorably to Alexia, the adopted eldest daughter the family dotes on. Lori asks for her own household registration book, wanting to separate herself from the family.
Her father slaps her and orders her out. Only Alexia, whose name and place in the family Lori has resented since childhood, tries to calm things. Lori leaves for a hotel, determined never to cry over this family again, and resolves to return for the registration despite the hostility waiting for her.
Her savings from the summer job are the only thing giving her the courage to walk away for good.
Opening
My parents had taught me never to pick at food, but my sister, Alyssa, ignored them, rummaging through her bowl for ages before flinging her spoon and fork aside.
“Lori,” she said, “sometimes I really think you can't compare to Alexia.”
I didn't understand what she meant.
She continued, “I don't get why you brought us out to eat. Are you trying to show off how easy it is for you to make money? Sure, you gave me a thousand-dollars, but in my eyes, you're still no match for my big sister.
