The story
For eight years, Emily has endured her marriage to Adrian, a wealthy perfectionist whose obsessive cleanliness rules their home. He snaps at her over sterilized chopsticks, orders her to cover her peeling, allergy-raw hands, and saves his tenderness for his childhood sweetheart, Clara Bennett, whose leftovers he finishes and whose mouth he wipes with the tie Emily made him.
After a call with her divorce lawyer, something in Emily goes quiet. She walks away from Adrian's insults, leaves the restaurant alone, and refuses to scrub the stove or accept his late gifts. Adrian, unsettled by her coldness, sends a cleaning service and a message, then lashes out when she stays indifferent, taunting her age and comparing her to Clara.
As memories surface of the night he locked her out with a shattered thermometer to shield Clara, Emily's heart stays still. The marriage she once fought for now means nothing, and she no longer bothers to explain herself.
Opening
During dinner, Adrian's childhood sweetheart, Clara Bennett, sat with red-rimmed eyes, staring at a half-eaten rice bowl. Noticing her distress, Adrian, the perfectionist with OCD, gently reassured her, "Come on, Sniffles, haven't I always finished your leftovers?"
I handed him the sterilized chopsticks, as I always did, but he snapped at me this time.
