The story
Talitha Fanning's family stands on the edge of ruin, and her plea for emergency funding is refused by her fiancé, Kendrick Thorne, who then becomes engaged to Nellie White. Her childhood friend, Ambrose Sinclair, arrives with an investment contract and a marriage proposal, and she accepts at once. Yet the company still falls, and her father dies of a heart attack. At his funeral, faint with grief, she overhears Ambrose and a friend: he destroyed her family, and on their wedding day he plans to stage an accident and take her uterus for Nellie.
Ambrose keeps up his gentle act, but the ring he leaves behind bears Nellie's favourite four-leaf clover, and the safe opens to Nellie's birthday, holding the documents that bankrupted her family and a journal of his love for Nellie. Pregnant and saying nothing, Talitha receives confirmation of her immigration paperwork and a plane ticket, and resolves to give Ambrose a wedding gift of her own.
