The story
When a stalker attacks Ellen, her husband Carter Dillamond dismisses her desperate calls and later arranges a settlement to hide that Kelley, the woman he favors, orchestrated the assault. Recovering in the hospital, Ellen overhears the truth and realizes five years with Carter mean nothing beside Kelley's five months.
She quietly asks a lawyer to draft a divorce agreement, while Carter keeps belittling her injuries and lavishing care on Kelley. On the day Ellen is discharged, Kelley takes her seat, sprays perfume Ellen is allergic to, and Carter throws Ellen out of the car in the rain.
Soaked and wounded, Ellen calls Scott Knapp, who once asked to marry her, and tells him to prepare for their wedding next month. Back home, she finds Carter feeding Kelley chicken soup and giving her the master bedroom, but Ellen no longer minds.

Ellen’s POV
When I was being stalked by a psycho, I called Carter Dillamond twenty times.
He finally picked up on the twenty-first call. I begged him, “Carter, someone’s following me! Come help me, please!”
But he sounded annoyed. “Can you grow up a little? I’m busy. Stop making things up.”
The moment he hung up, the attacker knocked me out, dragged me into an alley, and beat me until I was barely alive.
