The story

Years ago, Alexander Hughes took a bullet for Claire Bennett and nearly died, and she gave up everything for him in return. When Isabella Reed returned from abroad, their love curdled: Alexander forced Claire to abort their child and cut off her family's means of survival, all to please Isabella. Claire fought back, and the two became enemies.

Three years later, at a Hughes family banquet, Alexander arrives with a pregnant Isabella, yet his eyes keep returning to Claire. He calls her a stray, seizes her wrist and drags her toward the door, then throws her aside when Isabella claims Claire pushed her. The Hughes family, including Emily Hughes, waits for Claire to erupt as she once did, but she stays composed and moves to leave.

Outside, Thomas Reed waits for her, and Alexander orders him to drive the unconscious Isabella to a hospital. Thomas stays at Claire's side instead, and at her word a bodyguard pulls Alexander and Isabella from the car. Claire reminds Alexander who he is, and the bodyguard blocks his path.

Opening

I hid the truth from him, trading my own life for his, only to be branded by others as a filthy woman who had been passed around by countless men.

But in the year we hated each other most, Alexander forced me to have an abortion, cut off every path of survival for my family—just to make his childhood sweetheart smile.

I refused to give in. I fought back tooth for tooth, leaving Alexander besieged from all sides.

We should have been lovers for a lifetime, yet we became enemies locked in endless schemes.
