The story
Connor has been living on a hundred-dollar monthly allowance from his wife, Mallory, the wealthy CEO of Bishop Enterprises, while a gnawing stomach pain worsens into chronic atrophic gastritis with extensive mucosal erosion. A clinic doctor warns him that without immediate hospitalization he faces ulcers, perforation and worse, but with his savings gone he can barely afford day-old bread and expired milk, let alone the upfront admission fee.
When he tries to reach Mallory, her executive assistant Damon answers instead, mocking his medical crisis and refusing an emergency draw. Damon later blocks him outside the executive suite at Bishop Tower, dismissing his diagnosis as a forgery in front of the office staff. Meanwhile, Mallory sits in a VIP lounge telling her friend Morgan that Connor claims she is starving him out and wants a divorce, even as she wires him more money.
Connor overhears, and the truth of their marriage erupts into open confrontation.
Opening
Three months after the gnawing ache in my stomach turned chronic, I took a part-time shift as a barback at a downtown lounge.
That was where I ran into my wife.
Mallory was draped across a velvet booth in the VIP lounge, her long legs crossed, lazily swirling a tumbler of amber bourbon.
