The story
At a private tea party, the wives take a viral challenge: call your husband and ask for money. Mrs. Davies and Mrs. Rodriguez receive instant transfers, but when Amelia dials Gideon Thorne, her own husband, the call goes to voicemail, then is hung up. Vivienne Lane, the widowed sister-in-law Gideon has sworn to protect, calls him moments later and he answers at once, sending money for her son Callum without hesitation.
Back home, Gideon dismisses Amelia's hurt, insisting his care for Vivienne is a duty owed to his late brother. He tells her to prepare dinner for Vivienne and Callum the next day. Amelia finds his last message to her, sent while she was cramping, unanswered, yet he rushed to comment on Vivienne's dying succulent.
Vivienne arrives to apologize, meek and tearful, while Callum runs wild through the house. Amelia must decide how much more of herself she can give to a marriage where she always comes second.

The wives at the table were dissolving in laughter.
Mrs. Davies asked for a handbag; fifty grand hit her account instantly. Mrs. Rodriguez asked for a necklace; thirty grand, cleared.
When it was my turn, my palms were sweating, especially since my sister-in-law, Vivienne Lane, was also present—the perpetually grieving widow of Gideon’s older brother.
“Maybe I shouldn’t…” I tried to demur.
