Ethan’s arm tightened around me, the pressure almost bone-crushing. "Liv, let me explain. She followed me here, I—"
Isabelle, composing herself, ran a contemptuous gaze over me. "Relax, Olivia. I have no intention of stealing him from you." She smirked. "The CEO and I just have a… mutually beneficial arrangement. I have my own career and my own life. Unlike you, a helpless vine who can’t survive without a man to cling to."
I turned to Ethan, adopting his signature paranoid, whispery tone. "A mutually beneficial arrangement? Is she telling the truth?"
Ethan flinched as if I’d stepped on his tail. He whirled on Isabelle, his eyes feral. "Shut your mouth!" He turned back to me, his voice desperate. "Liv, don't listen to her lies. My heart belongs only to you! My body… that’s secondary…"
A distorted smile, a mirror of the one he wore when he was losing control, stretched across my face. "So, your secondary body… that can be given to anyone you please?"
I shoved him away with surprising speed, snatched a small, steel letter opener from the coffee table, and without a moment’s hesitation, pressed it to my own throat.
"NO!"
Ethan’s roar was ragged, torn from his soul. He lunged at me like a madman, his hand clamping around my wrist. The blade’s tip was a hair's breadth from my skin. His face was ashen, his entire body trembling.
"Let me die! Don't touch me with hands that have touched someone else!" I screamed, throwing his own past accusations back at him.
Isabelle stood by, arms crossed, sneering. "Seriously? What is this, the dark ages? The whole 'I'll kill myself' routine? Ethan, is this really the kind of neurotic drama queen you’re into?"
"GET OUT!" Ethan, finding an outlet for his terror and rage, spun around and slapped Isabelle across the face so hard she stumbled and fell. "Get the hell out of here, and don't you ever show your face in front of me and Liv again!"
Isabelle cradled her cheek, staring at him in disbelief before scrambling to her feet and fleeing.
