The story
Maren Fairchild needs twenty hours of sleep a day just to stay alive. When the Fairchilds bring their lost daughter back into their high-society world, they see only an irredeemably lazy girl who dozes through etiquette lessons and her own welcome banquet. Her mother seethes, her brother Simon douses her with ice water, and Alyssa, the adopted girl who took her place eighteen years ago, plays the wounded innocent.
None of them know that an untreated childhood fever left Maren with permanent neurological damage, and that her specialist warned she is already in the early stages of multiple organ failure. Forcing her awake is slowly killing her, and her body can no longer regulate its own temperature.
On the eve of Alyssa's debutante ball, the family demands Maren stay awake through the night, and Simon threatens her with a basin of ice water. As her vision darkens and her heart strains, Maren can only ask whether any of them would care if she died.
