The story
Chloe Price's high school nemesis, Lucas Vance, has become her younger brother Leo's direct supervisor. Lucas recognizes Leo and keeps asking about Chloe, so the panicked Leo tells him she died in a car crash. That day Lucas rides the elevator to the wrong floors, burns his hand with hot water, and staples his own hand, looking utterly distracted.
That night a message appears on Chloe's long-abandoned Facebook account: if there is a next life, he will tell her he loves her sooner. When Leo comes home with her favorite strawberry shortcake and eagerly takes over her mopping, Chloe knows he has done something wrong. Under interrogation, Leo admits the lie and begs her to stay dead for the sake of his career.
Chloe and Lucas were sworn enemies since freshman year at Skyline High, bickering constantly and never able to stand each other. Now Lucas believes she is gone, and his strange behavior makes her wonder what he really feels.

To avoid getting caught in the crossfire and facing Lucas's wrath,
my idiot brother panicked and told him I died in a car crash.
That entire day, Lucas took the elevator to the wrong floors, burned himself pouring hot water, and stapled his own hand.
He practically had "distracted and terrified" stamped on his forehead.
My brother saw right through it. "Sis, he's just scared you're gonna haunt him…
