The story
Joy Miller has always been her parents' precious little princess, until the daughter of her father's late military friend, Cecelia, comes to live with the family. From that day, Joy's bedroom, clothes and hair clips belong to Cecelia, and Joy is left to eat only what Cecelia does not want.
When Joy picks up a half-eaten popsicle Cecelia tossed on the floor, her mother kicks her to the ground and locks her in the deep chest freezer as punishment, then leaves with Cecelia to buy an apology gift. Cecelia secretly plugs the freezer in and clicks the child safety lock before they go. Trapped in the cold, Joy calls for her mother and waits to be forgiven.
Her grandmother arrives to visit, but no one can see or hear Joy, and her father and mother believe she has run off to her friend Lily's apartment. As her grandmother heads toward the kitchen freezer to cook Joy's favorite chicken wings, Joy can only watch.
Opening
They bought me countless pretty dresses and hair clips.
Every weekend or holiday, they took me on road trips.
I truly believed I was the happiest kid in the entire world.
Until my dad's late military buddy's daughter, Cecelia, came to live with us.
From that day on, my lovely bedroom belonged to her.
My clothes and hair clips became hers, too.
I was even forced to eat only whatever leftovers she didn't want.
Earlier today, I picked up the half-eaten popsicle she had tossed onto the floor, and she suddenly burst into tears.
