The story
Twenty years after her divorce, Hester James is ready to sign her house over to her son, Denys Fox. Then Denys announces he is bringing his father home so the three of them can be a family again, and calls her too proud to forgive an old betrayal. Hester answers by cutting all ties with Denys in the family group chat.
Denys rages that the relatives will talk, and his father Chad Fox phones to ask her to forgive him one more time. Hester refuses both, blocks the number, and the signing falls through. A week later Denys is at her door with a table of her favourite dishes, on his knees, swearing he has cut his father off for good.
Day after day he cooks and cleans and promises her a place in his future, and the ice in her chest begins to melt. Then, chasing the keys he left behind, she hears him on the stairs, coaxing his father: she has already caved, and the moment the house is signed over, Chad will move in.
Opening
On the day the house was to be signed over, my son sent me a message.
"Mom, in a little while I'm going to bring Dad over too. The three of us can be a family again, just like before."
He couldn't hide the excitement in his voice. But my chest gave a sudden, hard twist.
"I divorced your father more than twenty years ago."
He sighed. "Mom, now I've got to say something. You're too proud. You hold on to things too hard."
