The story
After six months away on business, Margot returns home to find her stepdaughter Blanche Pruitt has posted a cruel essay online, accusing her of abuse. When Margot cuts off Blanche's credit card and refuses to fund her luxury demands, Blanche escalates, spreading lies to relatives, friends, and business partners, then threatening to protest at Margot's company unless she restores the card and pays fifty thousand for emotional damages.
Margot's husband Vincent Pruitt rushes home and takes his daughter's side, dismissing Blanche's behavior as teenage rebellion. But when Margot checks on her own daughter Irene Pruitt, she discovers the girl bruised, thin, and terrified, hiding in a dark room. Irene reveals Blanche has been orchestrating beatings at school and threatening worse if she tells.
Vincent calls the injuries normal roughhousing, and Margot slaps him, vowing to cut off both father and daughter and expose what happened at the school. As she takes Irene to document her injuries, Vincent warns that if she walks out, their marriage is over.
