The story
On their tenth anniversary, Eleanor Turner lies alone in the couple's grand villa, burning with a fever of 102°F while her wealthy husband, Benjamin Davis, works overtime. In her fevered haze, a strange truth unfolds: she is living inside the pages of a book, and Benjamin is its male protagonist. The heroine, however, is not Eleanor but Mia Baker, the young housemaid he hired.
When Eleanor wakes, a younger, innocent version of herself appears, eager to know whether she and Benjamin ended up happy together. Benjamin arrives late, carrying a sickly sweet fragrance and a faint red stain beneath his shirt, and when the doctor reveals that Eleanor is three months pregnant, his attention still drifts toward the sliver of white lingering outside the door.
Back at the villa, Mia is summoned into the study that no one else may enter, and the young Eleanor insists the maid is setting herself up for heartbreak. Yet Eleanor can only murmur that Mia is different, her words carried away by the breeze.

It left me feeling oddly uneasy. In the vast emptiness of our grand villa, I lay alone on the couch, paralyzed by a high fever of 102°F, helpless as a stranded fish.
