The story
A beachfront condo sits empty all year, until the smart meter starts reporting about ten kilowatt-hours of use every single day. The owner, who had kept the place for retired parents to enjoy, suspects someone is living there without permission. Rather than call the property management company, the owner asks a delivery driver named Mike to knock on the door and record what happens. A middle-aged woman, Brenda, answers and insists no takeout was ordered, then slams the door.
Determined to see who is inside, the owner flies to the coast with family just before Christmas. The door code no longer works, though the lock shows no forced entry, meaning someone knew the code. Inside, the condo is wrecked: stained sofa, graffiti, a broken chandelier and table, torn curtains. A young man, Liam, blocks the doorway and shoves the owner back; the owner's father falls and is left injured on the floor.
With a parent hurt and a stranger claiming the home as his own, the owner is caught between worry and anger, and must find out who is truly living there.
Opening
My beachfront vacation condo had been vacant all year.
Suddenly, the smart meter linked to it sent me a notification to pay the electricity bill.
I ordered takeout and asked the delivery guy, Mike, to check on the place for me.
Mike recorded a video.
He knocked on my condo door, and a woman opened it, her face full of suspicion:
“I didn’t order takeout. You’ve got the wrong address.”
